Our client, a leading public sector organisation, based in Belfast are looking to recruit a Scientific Officer to join their team.

The role is available immediately for 51 weeks.

Hourly Pay: £14.47

37 hours however, though variable due to nature of work, there may be overtime and unsociable hours including weekend work. Candidates must be flexible.

Key Responsibilities:

The purpose of the post is to assist in scientific sampling of catches made onboard a fishing vessel during gear trial experiments. This posts involves handling and working with fish samples onboard a commercial fishing vessel.

The duties of the post are likely to include the following:

  • Working at sea on commercial fishing vessels for up to or more than 110days/year. Trips may be of up to 5 day duration.

  • Identify and record quantities landed and discarded fish and Nephrops from each haul, the length composition of the catch, and other biological samples as required.

Essential Criteria:

  • Have the necessary interpersonal skills for communicating with members of the fishing industry (e.g., fishermen).

  • Must be able to identify fish and nephrop species.

  • Proven ability to work at sea in inclement conditions up to 5 day duration on small commercial fishing vessels engaged in specific scientific studies.

  • Be sufficiently fit, able and willing to carry out field work that will require manual handling, working unsociable hours (e.g. weekends and early mornings), standing for long hours, sometimes poor sanitary conditions, and handling marine organisms.

  • Must have access to a form of transport to allow fulfilment of the requirements, including transportation of sampling gear.

  • Must hold a valid ENG1 seagoing medical certificate and certificates for the following mandatory courses for fleet observers, i.e., Personal Sea Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid and Safety Awareness.
