Inspector required in Newry

Initially for 6 months (may be extended)

£14.92 per hour 

Job duties: 

The post holder will be managing a team of 7 staff, which conduct a range on farm inspections required under agricultural legislation. This management role will include:

 Distributing work amongst staff

 Quality checking of completed work from group 1s

Encouraging key performance indicators (KPIs) to be met by staff

Liaising/problem solving with herd/flock keepers over a range of queries

Updating management spreadsheets and using a range of software databases including APHIS, NIFAIS, GIS mapping software ‘Spatial NI’, Content Manager, Outlook, Word, Excel and HRConnect database.

Taking a lead role in investigating and advising in issues related with animal welfare legislation, Identification Registration and Movement (IRM) legislation with respect to cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry.  This could include visits and investigations at sale yards, abattoirs, farms, cold stores.

Conducting inspections under Animal by product regulations to premises such as hunt kennels and farm incinerators

Accompanying and assisting group 1 staff to complete duties at larger herd/ flock tests on cattle, sheep, poultry and pigs

Monitor and replenish equipment for required sampling to proceed by group 1s

Maintain laboratory for packing samples to a high standard of health & safety and cleanliness

Ensure laundry is checked and dispatched routinely

Undertake performance management training and other relevant training

 Maintain an up to date knowledge of agricultural issues

Willing to participate with response to epizootic disease outbreaks and ensuring staff are also ready, through attending training and familiarisation with equipment and procedures

You will have:

Applicants must have:

  1. At least 4 GCSE/GCE “O” levels at Grade C or above in 4 subjects

(including English and Mathematics) or equivalent*


  1. (i) A Level 3 Work-based Diploma in Agriculture.


(ii) A BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture.


(iii) Equivalent**


  1. At least 18 months’ experience gained within the last 5 years of working with livestock.

“Livestock is defined as being agricultural animals, the main species being cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry”.


  1. 3 years’ experience in an animal health and welfare environment.


  1. At least 18 months staff management experience within the last 5 years. 

A driving license including the capability to tow vehicles would be an advantage in the event that they may be required to drive departmental vehicles.
